The Junior Cycling Project
At the highest junior level, performance depends heavily on your physiological engine, the capability to produce power and sustain intense efforts.
Our programme strategically develops your fresh power output, critical for junior-level success, while also introducing targeted training to gradually build durability. This ensures you perform at your highest level as a junior while effectively preparing you for the future demands of U23 racing.

Building the Right Engine Early
Our programme tracks four key metrics crucial to cycling performance:
Junior riders often exhibit fresh power metrics similar to their U23 counterparts. However, the critical difference is durability, how effectively you sustain power output as fatigue accumulates during racing.
Our programme tracks four key metrics crucial to cycling performance:
- VO₂ max is the size of your aerobic engine. It’s the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense effort. The higher your VO₂ max, the larger your potential to produce power aerobically.
- Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP) represents the upper limit of your aerobic power output. It’s the point where your body reaches its peak oxygen consumption. Developing a high MAP is essential for holding strong efforts over time.
- Critical Power (CP) is the power you can sustain for a prolonged period without fatigue setting in. It’s where aerobic efficiency meets endurance, and it’s a key indicator of how well your engine can sustain hard efforts.
- Fractional Utilisation is how much of your VO₂ max you can sustain at CP. The closer your CP is to your MAP, the more efficient your engine. This metric shows how effectively your aerobic capacity translates into sustainable performance.

Immediate Success with Long-term Vision
Our approach for juniors focuses primarily on enhancing your fresh power output, essential for winning races at the junior level. While maximising this strength, we strategically introduce targeted training to build your fatigue resistance.
We don't aim to immediately match the durability levels required at the U23 ranks. Instead, we gradually bridge this gap, significantly smoothing your transition into U23 racing. This strategic preparation reduces the "shock factor" associated with stepping up to higher levels, ensuring you hit the ground running as you advance.

Precision-driven and Individualised
Just like our U23 programme, we use precise scientific models to measure and track your performance. We analyse real-world power and heart rate data, offering tailored, accurate insights into your strengths and areas needing development.
This individualised approach means every training session directly aligns with your current level and future objectives. You receive clear guidance, focused exclusively on the metrics that matter.

Closing the Durability Gap
Over the years, we've observed that juniors typically lack the fatigue resistance that distinguishes elite U23 riders. By starting to improve your durability earlier, we not only enhance your immediate competitive edge but also lay a robust foundation for future success.
As a result, transitioning to the U23 level becomes significantly smoother, enabling you to quickly adapt and thrive in the more demanding racing environment.
